Let‟s take a look at one fundamental problem most Internet marketers‟ experience.

Symptoms: Joining anything that looks like it'll make you money, getting no results.
Cause: Opportunistic thinking
Internet Business Problem: Lack of Strategy

The very first obstacle we need to look at is you and your thinking.

The way I see things is that there are two different diametrically opposing ways of thinking when it comes to building a business and making money online. There‟s opportunistic thinking and strategic thinking. See the slide.

Here‟s the deal, opportunity seekers think opportunistically and entrepreneurs think
strategically.

An opportunity seeker is always looking for their big opportunity to make lots of money from the hottest opportunity of the moment. Their only criteria is, “Can I make money from this?” So today it‟s a juice deal, tomorrow its a fuel pill deal, something else, and yesterday it was some other hot concept already forgotten.

Opportunity seekers joins lots of MLM programs, and they use only a few of them, and the ones they do use get abandoned when the next socalled “easy” way to make money comes by. The question they ask themselves is, “What‟s the fastest way for me to make money right now?”

A true entrepreneur, on the other hand, is a completely different animal altogether.

An entrepreneur has a clear vision of what they want the business to become. Because they have a vision they can analyze their own strengths, their competitor strengths, the marketplace preferences and devise different strategies for achieving their vision.

After reviewing the pros and cons of each strategic alternative they pick the one strategy most certain to successfully achieve their goal. The entrepreneur knows that their biggest opportunity is always inside their business, following their ideal strategy and not the hot product that everyone is mailing for this week. And here‟s some inside information that any seasoned direct marketer will confirm. It‟s about 100 times easier to sell to an opportunity seeker than it is an entrepreneur. Why?

Because the opportunity seeker has no criteria – if you can convince him or her that they can make money with it, you‟ve made your sale. An entrepreneur, on the other hand, has to compare what you are offering to their current plans – will it make it easier for them to achieve their vision? Is this something that fits into their current approach and if it does is it superior to what they are currently doing?

And here‟s the rub, the overwhelming majority of Internet marketers are nothing more than digital opportunity seekers. They have no strategy, they hop from one approach to another, and while they may have some arbitrary income goal they have no vision of the business they would need to create in order to achieve it. And since they don‟t have a clear vision they cannot follow any sort of detailed plan to accomplish it.

So they end up joining anything and everything that comes with a big promise of easy money with the hope that this is going to be it – this is their big chance to make it big. They especially love (and fall victim to) the “Business in a box” products and spillover deals where the promises are huge rewards with little to no effort. Alright, let‟s say that I have either convinced you that you need to be an entrepreneur and build a business, or you already knew it.

Everything Else Was Incredible

This past weekend, I spoke at a three-day small business conference in Canmore, Alberta. A hop, skip and a jump from Calgary the 45-minute drives takes you into this incredible little mountain resort town called Canmore.

The host of the event took out the speakers for dinner on Friday night to this place she had been raving about.

The Trough is an eclectic upstart that has figured this service business out. I realize last week I wrote about Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant lessons, but this weekend was a sign that the owner has maybe been watching some of the “Kitchen Nightmare” shows and learned a thing or three.

Considering they just opened last year, their two recent awards as one of the top 10 new restaurants in Canada shows how good of a start they got off to.

When you first walk in, it is nothing to oooh and ahhhh about – but that very quickly changes.

It’s unassuming as you enter (classy – but not over the top or trying too hard to be something it’s not) … and quite cozy on the inside (seating ~50 max).

The quirky guy who greeted us was the owner –
and he was a master at schmoozing.

He remembered Cidnee’s name and treated her like a celebrity when we walked through the doors. (Seriously, people in the restaurant must have wondered who this lady was, with all the coddling going on.)

So we sit down and are handed these paper menus – again, unassuming and nothing to be impressed over. The choices looking divine – but we didn’t have time to even look at the menu much before the free appetizer samplers started appearing at our tables.

The brochette – to die for. The breading was not your typical slices - they looked like half a golf ball and were stuffed with the tastiest ingredients I had ever had in brochette.

NOW I was starting to see
what people loved about this place.

Then they brought the free ice wine samples for everyone – again, a very nice touch and very well chosen.

Next, another free pork wrapped appetizer that melted in your mouth … this was a very nice way to start our experience.

Then he educated us all about their incredible wine selection … and did he ever know his stuff.

Side note (and a lesson in itself): He told us of the young Wine Master he gets his wines from in Calgary. For $5,000, you can go to his wine store and he will reserve your own wine storage box. Throughout the year, he will keep it stocked with his best wine choices that suit your tastes. Anytime you want, you can come in and pick out as many of the bottles chosen for you. He even has one customer with a $250,000 wine “box.” There is always someone out there looking for the best of the best and is willing to pay for it.

The menu was equally diverse, ranging from jerk carpaccio and chicken tikka to braised lamb shank with mashed peas. I personally had the tenderloin – yum.

Everything about the experience was top notch.

From the food and wine selection, the appetizers (which we ordered nearly one of everything for the group), to the main course and dessert – every little detail was focused on the customer experience and getting us to tell others about this wonderful little find.

As we were wrapping up dessert (four and a half hours later) – Cidnee got the final surprise of the night … the bill for everything.

Nice touch: On top of the bill for the night was a stack of business cards so we could all tell our friends and family (which I am gladly doing here).

When it was handed to her at first, she had a weird look on her face. We all thought it was much higher than expected … not expecting it was the opposite.

Seriously, for an experience like this for eight people, it would usually be a fairly pricey dinner.

Not this time.

Cidnee looked puzzled that is was so low, even checking the bill to make sure that everything was added in.

Imagine that … your customers thinking the experience was worth TWICE what it cost them …

Actually trying to find ways to pay you more!

Even with the mandatory 18% gratuity added in – the bill was a pleasant surprise.

We all left there happy, a little tipsy from the incredible wine, and raving about what we just experienced.

Now, I have thought a lot about this night as there were some incredible lessons here for every business:

Work real hard at building word of mouth marketing systems. Between the eight of us there, I would bet we each tell 50 people about the experience at The Trough – 400 people will know about it from one single dinner.
Offering high end experiences is not about the flash, glitz or glamor. This was very unassuming inside and out – it was everything in between that really mattered to us (the food, drinks and service was as good as it gets). Deliver top notch quality where it really matters.
Personalized attention to each and every customer that walks through your door (or buys your products).
Be odd. Find something you can do to stand out from all the others they could be buying from. In this case it was the owner. He was very friendly, but seemed quite quirky in a number of ways – even the way he dressed was somewhat different.
Give them samples and freebies. Let people try out small samples of your most popular offerings … they WILL order more.
The packaging and presentation of the actual product or service is critical – pay close attention to this.
Just when they think you have already over-delivered – throw in another freebie or two (like the dessert samples we got).
Build the experience up so they honestly think it was worth at least twice as much as what they paid. I will always remember this place – and the look on Cidnee’s face when she realized how much lower it was than expected.
Give them a GOOD story to tell others! Like I said, this little dinner party of eight will undoubtedly tell 400 others.
Always be thinking about how you can HELP THEM tell your story. The stack of business cards was a simple little add-on I rarely see used.
I didn’t like the name – it sounded like a buffet style restaurant – but everything else was exceptional. If there would be one thing I would recommend they change, it’d be the name. Then again, maybe that is why this restaurant is doing so well – it, again, is quite odd in a number of ways.
Limit how many you can serve if you are delivering high-end experiences.
Last, reward the people that help you deliver. Near the end of the night, the staff was getting a little antsy that we were still there, so the owner gave them each a single glass of their incredible ice wine (which sold for $10 a glass). The staff was happy to enjoy their refreshments while we got ready to go.

Overall this was an experience to remember. We will be back, and I will be telling lots of people about this experience.

And I plan on implementing many of their ideas into my (completely unrelated) business.

By now, I do hope you have heard of Gordon Ramsey, host of “Kitchen Nightmares” and “Hell’s Kitchen”.

If not, I would highly suggest watching the “Kitchen Nightmares” show sometime soon.

First, a WARNING: Thin-skinned folks need not tune in.

If you cannot handle foul language and incredibly abrasive personalities, do not watch Gordon’s show!

He is rude, loud, in-your-face, and LOVES swearing to get his point across (and everything is a point, so pretty well every sentence consists of swear words).

I am not going to go too much into Gordon’s past, but, rest assured, this ex-professional Scottish football player has a list of credentials that is long, and highly admirable.

He is now working on his 25th restaurant and many of them have multiple Michelin stars to their name (the most recognized and influential culinary ratings guide). He has multiple best selling cookbooks, 4 television shows and a DVD series, to name a few.
The story line behind a kitchen nightmare …

Gordon comes into restaurants that are almost ready to close their doors, for any one of multiple different reasons. He has 1 week to turn the business around and make it a success.

He is a no-bull guy and when he starts, there is no stopping him.

Why is this important to you?

Because Gordon’s formula for a 7-day business turnaround is one that each and every one of us should pay close attention to. If you are looking to increase your sales, the ideas below will help you see new ideas you have never thought of before. If you are struggling in your business or cash flow – go through each step below and reconstruct your business from the ground up.

Step #1 – Figure out what you are selling now.

Sounds basic – but is it really? When Gordon first steps into one of the restaurants he is about to makeover, he sits down for a meal.

While he waits for the different dishes he ordered, he watches carefully for the way the staff works, the way they treat customers, and the way customers are enjoying (or not) the food.

When the food shows up, he is usually disgusted in what they are passing off as main course meals.

Also, the restaurants that he steps into are almost always seriously lacking enough customers to stay in business.

Step #2 – Who is behind this disaster they call a restaurant?

This is where the real truth starts to come out. He interviews the owners, the servers, the head chef and the kitchen staff.

Usually, he finds one or two of them passionate about the business, the rest of them are putting in time between paychecks.

Typically the ingredients are sub-par, the menu confusing with too many options, and the actual food being delivered not worthy of a roadside burger stand.

Step #3 – Find out what the customers REALLY want

Rarely is it what is being delivered!

The first thing to be done - - ASK THEM.

Find out what is missing on the restaurant scene.

Find out what foods they want the most, or that they have a tough time finding.

Find out who the regulars are and what they want.

Find out which restaurants are doing best in your area – then go in there to sample their food and service, always looking for ideas to improvise upon.

And, very important, if it is a seasonal business or location – make sure that the restaurant caters to those who live there year round! Those are the people who keep the restaurant open – catering to one-time tourists is a sure-fire way to bankruptcy.

Step # 4 – Find the signature dishes

Such a simple concept that so many businesses (in every possible niche) completely ignore.

What is the one dish that the head chef enjoys making the most?

Usually, Gordon finds out that the chef has an incredible signature plate that is not on the menu. Why? The owner is usually the problem. As Gordon says, “owners should never write the menu – the head chef should be the one to design the menu”.

Step #5 - Simplify the menu and the number of choices

Too many choices leave people confused and lacking in direction.

It also over complicates what is required in the kitchen to deliver what was promised (resulting in inferior quality on all the plates).

The menu is typically cut in less than half and the customers are usually very happy about the change.

Also, a large portion is NOT a secret to restaurant success. Smaller portions reduce waste, and keep customers coming back for more.

Step #6 – Systems ARE the key to success

Once the new menu has been created, putting systems in place to ensure consistent (and fast) delivery is key.

Being able to double business in a week, without loss in quality or without increase wait times, is something Gordon does in every restaurant he walks into.

Step # 7 – Feet on the street marketing

Last, now that everything is in place and the systems have been tested on a smaller scale, they get busy.

Getting the staff all geared up in uniforms, loaded up with their new signature dishes, they hit the street and let anyone and everyone try out the new menu choices.

Usually, an afternoon of that and they have enough curiosity built up to guarantee their first night’s dinner is packed with diners and hungry new customers.

The 7-step formula above sounds simple, but it consistently turns failing restaurants around in 1 single week.

The customers love the new choices (the ones they told you to start making), the staff become much more motivated to deliver consistent service, and the restaurant very quickly starts to make a profit.

Gordon usually revisits the restaurant after a month or two to see if they have held together all the new changes.

9 times out of 10 they have held it together, stuck with the changes, and are enjoying more money than they have experienced in years.

And yes, this does apply to your business to …

* Figure out exactly what you are selling now

* Who is behind your business? What do the customers see? What do they think?

* Find out what the customers REALLY want

* Find your signature offer

* Simplify the number of choices

* Systems ARE the key to success

* Feet on the street marketing

Use only the finest ingredients in areas the customers enjoy most

What is the passion – where did it come from – find a way to bring it back

Don’t take it personally – take it seriously

It’s about the story you give them to tell others

When you hire a professional to help – try listening to their advice for a change (not that any customers who hire a copywriter or marketing consultant would ever ignore the advice of an expert!)

What you hear most on the show: “%^&#ing HELL!” (which he says every time he sees something that is destroying the business – about every 32 seconds you will hear him say “%^&#ing HELL!”

The number of new people coming into MLM each year is now drastically out of proportion with the numbers needed for new company start ups. Its estimated that ten new serious MLM's start everyday and many more shonky ones. Thats thousands of new MLM’s launch every year thanks to the internet.

You can literally start your own company from your lounge room computer if you want but there are only so many people to go around.

Welcome to the world of the Pre-Launch BUZZ.

A company’s only chance to catch the attention of networkers, and steer them away from their current opportunity with the promise of “getting in on the ground floor.”

Getting a better deal and the wonder drug, called spill over.

Addicted to that new car smell and deal making sales managers.

Before you know it, the game has started AGAIN. This time around a company that promises to be the biggest and best with their new patented Wonder Vitamin 2000 that will change the world.

Networkers inevitably flock to it by the ten’s of thousands trying to “get in on top” and if they don’t, it doesn’t matter because another shiny new MLM will launch in about 6-12 months.

So when the music of the pre-launch stops and people find themselves no better of, people at the bottom start to scramble to find another new pre-launch deal and in doing begin to unravel their old company from the bottom up in the process.

This has resulted in a vicious cat fight between these companies over a dwindling supply of warm bodies, complete with name calling, back-stabbing, and an endless supply of lawsuits.

Make no mistake about it… In network marketing, people are the commodity that is traded, and YOU are very valuable.

The “Buffer Zone” that once existed has been destroyed by the information age and its Gone and forever and it Took Your Residual Income With It!

Before the internet, organizations and companies were protected by an information time lag, creating an information buffer zone, this buffer shielded people and organisations from the marauding band of downline pirates, opinions, competitors, and advertising that we are now bombarded with through emails and the internet.

It’s this buffer zone of times past that allowed relationships to be built, skills to be learned, and loyalties to strengthened and it went on uninterrupted for decades prior to the internet.

The internet has all but destroyed the zone.

It happens everyday now... You're sitting pretty on top of a fairly large organization. You think you've finally found that "residual" pot of income gold at the end of the rainbow. You're making about $20,000 a month.

You quit your job 5 months ago, bought a new house, that new sports car you've always wanted, and paid off all your debt. Life is good... Then one day, the company changes their compensation plan just a little bit.

One of your leaders is NOT happy about it. They decide to move to another company, and with one click of a mouse... With one single email to his list of a few thousand recipients upline, downline and side-line... He basically destroys dozens of people's businesses, cutting their checks in half or even worse... Including yours.

Its like a farmer that wakes up one day and finds that all his fences have disappeared and his live stock wondered off to greener pastures.

That’s what the internet has done to MLM it floods people with an unending almost unlimited supply of new opportunities and distractions.

Before the internet this was not really possible and therefore people that did this were branded junkies and bandits. The income you're relying on to pay the mortgage, invest for retirement, and put your kids through school literally vanishes overnight. If something similar to this scenario hasn't happened to you yet... It will.

It's a sobering thought when you realize that your lively-hood in an MLM business is completely dependent upon strangers you've never met.

You don't know their long-term plans. You don't know about their family problems, and you don't know what they'll do next, yet your check is dependent upon them and thousands of others just like them because you simply cannot earn a full-time living on your own personal efforts with an MLM compensation plan.
